nd Innings Punjab Kings
Right then, that is it from this record-breaking encounter. We have a double-header coming up in the Indian T20 League on 27th April, Saturday. First it will be a clash between rivals Mumbai and Delhi that will start at 3.30 pm IST (10 am GMT). The second match will be played between Lucknow and table-toppers Rajasthan and that will begin at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT), but as you know, you can always join us early for all the build-up to the games. Untill then, cheers and goodbye!
Jonny Bairstow is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his incredible match-winning ton. He says that they got off to a good start in the Powerplay and they needed to take some risk that paid. Adds that sometimes luck doesn't go your way but when you are chasing a big target you have to take some risks. Mentions that the mindset was pretty clear from the start as they had to go all out attack but they also played down Sunil Narine as he was a danger. Credits Shashank Singh for his knock and says that he has a lot of experience and kept his calm and it was a treat to watch his clean hitting.
Sam Curran, the victorious skipper of Punjab says that the win is pleasing and cricket is turning to baseball and says they deserved this victory after a tough few weeks. On high scores being achieved, he says that these small grounds with dew, coaching and confidence make all the stats go out of the window. Appreciates Johnny and says he keeps proving how good of a player he is and says Shashank is a true find along with Ashutosh Sharma and he is really pleased with these two points and proud of the team.
Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Kolkata says that the total was good enough and the way the batters batted was tremendous to see. Adds that Sunil Narine along with Phil Salt giving them the start was phenomenal and a treat to the eyes. Mentions that both the teams played well and they will have to go back to the drawing board and rectify things and with one more game here they will have to access the conditions better and come back stronger. Appreciates Narine and says there's a lot to learn from him and he is the MVP.
Presentation Time…
The man of the moment Shashank Singh is down for a chat. He says when he was in the dugout he noticed that the ball was coming onto the bat really nicely and he just had to play proper cricketing shots. Adds that he played Sunil Narine's over out with ones and twos and attacked the rest of the bowlers. Mentions that he has been given a free hand and is supported well to go out and express himself. Talks about the previous losses and says there were smaller moments that they failed to capitalize on but here Prabhsimran Singh gave them the perfect start and the way Jonny Bairstow batted was exceptional. Concludes that there is a lot of learning for him and they will look to take one game at a time and hope to change the table around.
Earlier in the game, Kolkata posted the highest-ever T20 total at the Eden Gardens. Sunil Narine and Phil Salt got a couple of good fifties while Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer played decent cameos towards the end. Arshdeep Singh got a couple of wickets for Punjab while Sam Curran and Rahul Chahar chipped in with one each. While chasing, it was absolute carnage from Punjab. Jonny Bairstow's stunning ton coupled with smashing fifties from Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh made sure that they etch their name in the history books.
Kolkata, on the other hand, well there is not much to say as when you score 261 and still lose in a T20, a lot of things went wrong for them. Every bowler was taken apart like anything and disappeared. However, the only positive was Sunil Narine. After his excellent fifty, he picked up a wicket and conceded just 24 runs, and forced a run out as well. They will need to go back to the drawing board and come back with a clear mindset in the next game.
Punjab got off to an absolute flier with both Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh  going all guns blazing in the Powerplay. They added 93 runs in that but unfortunately lost the latter due to a run-out but he did the damage with a fiery knock of 54 off just 20 balls. The Englishmen continued the momentum and and did not let the asking rate to go out of reach. Rilee Rossouw also played a nice little cameo to keep them in the hunt. Bairstow kept firing from one end and notched up an exceptional ton while Shashank Singh provided him excellent support as well. Both of them were phenomenal with their power hitting and it was a treat to watch them. Jonny Bairstow remained unbeaten on 108 off just 48 balls while Shashank Singh smashed 68 off just 28 balls and took their side to a historic win.
RECORD ALERT! PUNJAB CREATES HISTORY! This is the highest successful chase in T20s anywhere in the world. The ball just kept flying from both teams in this game and it is another Englishmen who took down Kolkata at their home. This is also the game with the most number of sixes hit in this format and we just have to applaud how Punjab chased this mammoth total with eight balls to spare. Kolkata have to erase this game from their memories as quickly as possible and move on to the next game.

We are back for the chase! The two umpires make their way to the middle followed by the Kolkata team who are taking the field. It will be Jonny Bairstow along with Prabhsimran Singh who replaces Arshdeep Singh as the impact substitute to open for Punjab. The debutant, Dushmantha Chameera has the new ball in hand and is raring to go. Let's play..
… THE RUN CHASE …
Following a promising start in the first over, Punjab's bowling attack struggled to contain the rampant Kolkata openers, who capitalized on loose deliveries and exploited fielding lapses to build a commanding foundation from the outset. Despite early opportunities with three dropped catches, Kolkata's openers relentlessly piled on the pressure, setting the stage for a daunting total. Punjab eventually found respite with a breakthrough courtesy of Rahul Chahar's bowling, which momentarily stemmed the onslaught. Captain Sam Curran redeemed himself after conceding consecutive sixes by dismantling Phil Salt's stumps, offering a glimmer of hope for Punjab. Arshdeep Singh continued his impressive spell in the middle overs, snaring the crucial wicket of Andre Russell before he could inflict further damage. However, just as Punjab appeared to regain control and rein in the run flow, their death bowling woes resurfaced, conceding 71 runs in the final five overs. Despite a valiant effort, highlighted by Rahul Chahar's economical bowling and a couple of crucial wickets for Arshadeep, Punjab's bowlers were unable to contain Kolkata's onslaught, allowing them to set a target of 262 runs which will need something extraordinary from the batters of Punjab to chase down. Can Punjab break their four-match losing streak and put up a brilliant batting performance to chase down this imposing total? Or will Kolkata compound their woes and secure another victory? We shall soon find out as the chase comes to you in a bit.
Phil Salt is up for a chat. He says that we know how good Narine has been and it was good to get the partnership. Adds that both of them kept it simple, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Tells that he do not want to elaborate much on that as there is still plenty of the game left. Mentions that it is a good wicket with pace on and their bowlers will look to use the change-ups which they have done at this ground and then they also have Varun and Sunil in the middle overs. Ends by saying that there is a lot of humidity and he is dripping wet like being in a swimming pool or something.
Yet again, Kolkata have showcased their prowess with the bat, delivering another high-quality batting masterclass to amass a formidable total of 261 runs at the conclusion of their innings. Kolkata's opening partnership proved to be the catalyst for their innings, with both Sunil Narine and Phil Salt launching a relentless assault on the opposition from the outset. Their blistering onslaught saw the side to a formidable 76 runs by the conclusion of the Powerplay, setting the tone for an explosive finish. Narine, in particular, showcased his ability with the bat, crafting a gritty 71-run knock before his departure, while Salt continued to exhibit aggressive intent, compiling a well-earned 75 runs before falling victim to an exceptional yorker. The promotion of Andre Russell up the order further intensified Kolkata's offensive, as the explosive all-rounder wasted no time in unleashing a flurry of boundaries before his dismissal. However, the momentum remained firmly in Kolkata's favour, courtesy of a dynamic 43-run partnership between the Iyer duo, Shreyas and Venkatesh who blazed their way in just 18 balls. Their quickfire contribution propelled Kolkata to their second-highest total, culminating in a daunting target of 262 runs for Punjab to chase.

On the flip side, Punjab find themselves mired in a slew of challenges, languishing at the penultimate position on the table after enduring defeats in six out of their eight encounters thus far. Despite showcasing glimpses of brilliance and mounting remarkable comebacks, Punjab has faltered at crucial junctures, succumbing to narrow defeats that loom ominously over their campaign. The absence of Shikhar Dhawan due to injury has dealt a severe blow to the team's batting strength, leaving the unit floundering on many occasions. Amidst the tumult, it has been the valiant efforts of Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma that have provided fleeting moments of hope. However, the erratic performances of the bowling unit have only exacerbated Punjab's woes, with inconsistency plaguing their efforts thus far. This glaring vulnerability poses a pressing concern that must be promptly addressed if Punjab harbours any hopes of clawing their way back into contention for the playoffs. With the stage being set for yet another crucial showdown, Punjab will be steadfast in their resolve to deliver a standout performance and catalyze a much-needed turnaround in their fortunes while Kolkata will look to dominate and solidify their spot at the top two. Who are you backing to get over the line here? We shall soon find out as Toss and team updates come to you in a bit.
Kolkata have undoubtedly been a force to reckon with this season, currently holding strong in the coveted second position on the points table, with just two setbacks in their 7 encounters. The batting lineup has been the backbone of their success, firing on all cylinders with the opening duo of Sunil Narine and Phil Salt consistently setting the stage ablaze, providing solid starts that lay the foundation for the dynamic middle order to flourish. However, amidst the euphoria of their batting prowess, the bowling department has struggled to hit its stride, narrowly escaping tight situations with performances that have fallen short of expectations. All eyes will now be fixated on the resurgence of Mitchell Starc, whose return to top form could prove monumental in the team's journey forward in the tournament. While the spinners have displayed consistency, there's an urgent call for the rest of the bowling unit to collectively step up and provide robust support to a batting order that has shouldered the lion's share of responsibilities thus far.
Hello and a warm welcome, to the exhilarating showdown of match number 42 in the Indian T20 League, unfolding right here at the historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata! Amidst the pulsating atmosphere, the home team, Kolkata, will spar with Punjab in what promises to be yet another riveting encounter as we inch closer to the business end of this tournament.
… MATCH DAY …
As the Indian T20 League 2024 enters its crucial phase, teams are vying for position, with most having completed around 8 matches. While the frontrunners surge ahead, the middle of the table is tightly packed, with three teams tied at ten points each and another three at 8 points, setting the stage for an intense battle for playoff spots. Match number 42 promises to be a captivating encounter as Kolkata, currently holding the second position, hosts Punjab, who are struggling near the bottom of the table. The iconic Eden Gardens provides the backdrop for this showdown. Kolkata's campaign has been fueled by thrilling victories, powered by their formidable batting lineup. The decision to promote Sunil Narine alongside Phil Salt has proven fruitful, with the duo consistently providing explosive starts. Narine's aggressive approach has significantly boosted the team's run rate in the Powerplay, alleviating pressure on the middle order. Angkrish Raghuvanshi's emergence at number 3 further bolsters their batting. Skipper Shreyas Iyer's leadership and consistent performances have been pivotal, while finishers Rinku Singh and Andre Russell have provided crucial contributions in the middle order. However, the form of Mitchell Starc has been a major cause of concern for them as he has not only been pretty expensive but also hasn't provided breakthroughs. Furthermore, Kolkata would be looking for their spinners to step up and assert control during the crucial mid-overs phase. In their recent clash against Bengaluru, although they posted an imposing total of 222 runs, their narrow victory by just a solitary run underscores the urgent need for improvement. In contrast, Punjab finds themselves in a precarious position, losing four games on the trot. Despite stellar performances from Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma with the bat, Punjab has struggled to convert individual brilliance into team victories. The absence of Shikhar Dhawan has left a huge void at the top of the order, with Sam Curran and Prabhsimran Singh striving to establish a stable partnership up top. They do pose a strong middle order but Jitesh Sharma will aim to get off the blocks. While Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh have been able to take crucial wickets for Punjab, their bowling performances have been marred by inconsistency, leading to expensive spells as they often find themselves leaking runs during crucial stages of the match. On the brighter side, Harpreet Brar has showcased his all-round abilities impressively, contributing effectively with both bat and ball. Additionally, Harshal Patel has begun to find his rhythm in the last couple of games, providing hope for improvement. With Kolkata boasting a formidable record at Eden Gardens, Punjab will be eager to defy the odds and turn their fortunes around. Which team will you be rooting for in this high-stakes encounter?
